How do one-visit dental crowns work?
Traditionally, dental offices require at least two appointments to complete a dental crown. The first visit involves an initial consultation and preparation of the natural tooth needing the crown. The tooth’s natural enamel is shaved down, and impressions are made using a messy ingredient. These are then sent off to an outside laboratory to fabricate the new restoration for the patient based on the dentist’s instructions. A temporary crown is bonded onto the prepared tooth to protect it until the next appointment when patients return to have it removed and replaced with their final dental crown.
Fortunately, there’s a better way! Dr. Richard J. Koeltl and his team start with preparations of the tooth in much the same way. Then, instead of using messy goop to create a mold for the natural tooth, digital impressions are taken within seconds to get the contours of your tooth into our system. Then, using specialized software, we have a milling device that will fabricate the dental crown out of a small block of porcelain while patients wait. This eliminates added time and appointments and allows for a same-day restoration that looks just as natural as the remaining teeth!
