Evading Dental Erosion

Dental erosion simply means is that the hard tissue that covers your teeth is wearing away. That may sound simple, but it is irreversible, and can lead to severe damage to your teeth. So, it is serious. That’s the bad news. The good news is that it is preventable.

There are several causes of dental erosion. It has been linked to things like reflux after eating, bulimia, alcoholism and pregnancy. But one of the leading causes of dental erosion is what we drink every day. Acidic drinks, like soft drinks, fruit juices and even some sports drinks have been found to be factors in dental erosion. On the other hand, water, milk and even yogurt may help prevent it.
Symptoms can include sensitive and/or yellowing teeth. You may also notice cracks or dents in your teeth; and they may even appear to be transparent around the edges.

So, what can you do? Avoiding acidic drinks is a good start. It may even help to “skip the fizz” such as those carbonated drinks and stick with water, or tea. Having some water or milk after acidic drinks or soft drinks can help neutralize the acids. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristle brush and a fluoride toothpaste is a big part of the fight, but you should also remember to wait an hour after eating or drinking acidic food or beverages to brush your teeth.
