Avoiding Enamel Erosion

Posted .

Are you interested in avoiding enamel erosion? If so, you’re on the right track toward a top-notch smile! Enamel erosion can be destructive for the smile because it attacks the tooth enamel and weakens it. This can promote dental issues like cavities and tooth fractures. It’s best to maintain strong and healthy teeth and our dentist, Dr. Richard J. Koeltl, is happy to help you avoid enamel erosion by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Avoid acidic foods and drinks. Acid is the major culprit of enamel erosion. Acid attacks the enamel and wears it away. Acid makes the teeth vulnerable to tooth decay and tooth injuries.

-Use fluoride. Fluoride can strengthen the tooth enamel, and the stronger the teeth are, the greater chance you have of avoiding enamel erosion. So, use fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash regularly, and talk with your dentist about fluoride treatments or supplements.

-Wait to brush. If you consume an acidic food or drink, if you brush immediately, the acid can cause more damage. So, wait at least 30 minutes to brush to give your saliva a chance to neutralize the acid.
